Adult Cardiology and Cardiac PACU teams celebrate the success of the Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion procedure program.

Loma Linda University Health has achieved a significant milestone in its Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) procedure program, marking over 600 successful procedures since the program began. This innovative treatment provides a critical solution for patients with atrial fibrillation at increased risk of stroke who seek alternatives to long-term blood thinners.

Since its inception, the program has experienced remarkable growth in patient volume, reflecting both the cardiovascular team's expertise and the community's trust in them. In 2020, the program performed 50 procedures. By 2021, that number nearly doubled to 93, and it continued to climb, with 138 patients treated in 2022 and 168 in 2023. In 2024, 155 patients have undergone the procedure, bringing the total to an impressive 604.

The LAAO procedure is a minimally invasive option designed to prevent blood clots from forming in the left atrial appendage, a small pouch in the heart where clots are more likely to develop in atrial fibrillation patients. By closing off this area, the procedure reduces the risk of stroke while enabling many patients to reduce or eliminate their dependency on blood-thinning medications, which can sometimes carry significant risks and side effects.

“Our program’s growth represents a commitment to delivering advanced, patient-focused care to those in our region and beyond,” said cardiac electrophysiologist Rahul Bhardwaj, MD. “Each procedure is a testament to the skill of our team and the positive outcomes we strive to provide for our patients.”

LLUH’s success with the LAAO program underscores its role as a regional leader in cutting-edge cardiovascular care. The multidisciplinary team involved in these procedures combines state-of-the-art technology with personalized treatment approaches, ensuring patients receive optimal care tailored to their needs.

Patients and families have expressed gratitude for the procedure's life-changing benefits. Many note improvements in their quality of life and peace of mind knowing their stroke risk has been significantly reduced.

With its continued focus on innovation and excellence, Loma Linda University Health remains dedicated to advancing heart care and improving patients' lives in the Inland Empire and beyond.
