Loma Linda University School of Medicine has appointed Lance Brown, MD, MPH, to serve as chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Brown, a professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics, joined the School of Medicine faculty in 2003 and recently served as vice chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
“Dr. Brown brings a depth of clinical expertise, leadership experience, and dedication to education that made him an outstanding choice to lead the Department of Emergency Medicine, said Tamara Thomas, MD, dean of the School of Medicine. “We are confident he will continue to build on the department’s strong foundation, guiding it into the future with vision, compassion, and a deep commitment to our mission.”
Over his two-decade tenure, Brown has served in several leadership roles across Loma Linda University Health, including fellowship director in pediatric emergency medicine, division chief of pediatric medicine, vice chair of operations for emergency medicine, and president of the medical staff for Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.
He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to 41 book chapters, and edited a textbook in pediatric emergency medicine. Brown has given more than 250 lectures and held national leadership roles, including chair of the Section Affairs Committee for the American College of Emergency Physicians, a six-year term on the emergency medicine review committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and as an expert reviewer for the Medical Board of California. He currently serves as an American Board of Emergency Medicine representative to the American Board of Pediatrics.
Brown earned his Doctor of Medicine degree and Master of Public Health from Harvard University in 1994. He completed a residency in emergency medicine at Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center and a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Loma Linda University Health.
He is board-certified in emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine.
Brown succeeds E. Lea Walters, MD, who has served as chair of the department since 2020.
The position was approved by Loma Linda University Health Board of Trustees in September.
